Downland Farming
Alison grew up on a farm and now farms with her husband on the chalk downland of the North Wessex Downs. The land has been farmed by the same family for over a hundred years. The book is written to introduce children to how they farm to support nature alongside growing crops and raising animals. It is set in the summer with crops being harvested. The book is designed for children up to about 9 years old. There is a bee to be found on every double page for younger children. “Rufus and Sarah’s Walk” is beautifully illustrated by a local artist. Children are taken on a journey around the farm while the two characters Sarah and her dog Rufus check on the animals’ water. On the way they encounter wildlife, flowers and insects who are living alongside a busy farmed landscape. Alison also runs bespoke visits for small groups, primary and secondary school children to introduce them to nature friendly farming.
